Robert A. Lowenstein, M.D. is Board certified in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry. Dr. Lowenstein has directed numerous hospital and community-based mental health programs for children and adults. He is a Life Fellow of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, and is a Life Member of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, and the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Society.
He graduated from Columbia College in New York City, and the University of Health Sciences/Chicago Medical School. He was trained in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. He received training in psychoanalysis at the New York Medical College.
A nationally recognized expert in the field of child neglect and abuse, Dr. Lowenstein was appointed by Mayor Ed Koch to serve for successive terms on the City of New, Mayor’s Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect from 1978 to 1986.
Dr. Lowenstein has participated in numerous research medication trials as a Principal Investigator, studying the effectiveness and safety of medications used to treat ADHD, Depression, and Bipolar Mood Disorders.
Dr. Lowenstein has served on the Board of Directors of the Watson Institute since 2001, and the Board of Directors of the Craig House from 1998 to 2001. He previously served on the Boards of the New York Council on Child Psychiatry, Womanspace, (a shelter for abused women and children), and the New Jersey Association for Retarded Children, and The Hudson School.
Dr. Lowenstein is a Custody Evaluator to the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County – Family Division, and is Psychiatric Consultant to the Allegheny County Department of Human Services, Office of Children, Youth, and Families.
Dr. Lowenstein serves on the Board of Directors of the Pittsburgh Opera.
